What is the plan chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and What is the outcome of the end of the year?

Goal Orientation

Surendranath College for Women under the astute guidance of Respected Professor Sudin Chattopadhayay , Honorable President, Governing Body, believes that innovation coupled with consistent endeavor is the key to attain Systematic Progress towards quality cultivation by dedication & performance.

The Goal is oriented towards quality enhancement and quality sustenance. In consonance with learner demand and national needs, this institution is in constant endeavor to frame policies, procedure and programmes with sincerity and coordination to devise realistic and attainable quality benchmark.

The tentacles of Schematic Planning

Curricular.

In accordance to the suggestions recommended by the Members of the Peer Team from NAAC, introduction of both regular UG Courses and Professional Courses have been planned. Proposal for Sociology, Statistics, Urdu and Computer Science as Scheduled UG Course has been submitted to West Bengal State Council of Higher Education through University of Calcutta.

A PG Course in GIS & Remote Sensing in accordance to NAAC recommendation is brought under the process of delineation in collaboration with IIT, Kanpur. Professor Onkar Dikshit , Department of Civil Engineering, IIT, Kanpur has kindly consented to be the Chairperson of the Curriculum formation Committee.

Teaching – Learning Evaluation.

Departmental

Each Department of this College has an systematic Teaching Plan checked & appreciated By the Members of the NAAC peer Team. Probable dates of Unit Test in accordance to the instruction of the University of Calcutta for General students would have to be incorporated for the convenience of the students. For Honours Students, Departments conducts voluntary but regular Tutorial Classes and Examination in order to prepare and equip the students in response to learner’s demand. It has been planned to inform the students about the itineraries of these programmes at the introduction of curricular season for sequential management in the interest of the students.

Institutional

On behalf of the institution Honours students were provided with dates of of statutory Test Examination for the three each years of 1st, 2nd, 3rd including Practical Examinations in consonance with University of Calcutta regulations.

Representatives of students also participate in decision making process in order to generate a facilitating Evaluation programme in stead of a Coercive dogmatic process. This has been a regular practice for this institution.

Infra Structural.

The Primary emphasis has been to ensure proliferated access to curricular aids for the students. This is the foundation of effective delivery management.

This institution has Six Departmental Seminar Libraries and other Departments are raising their own seminar libraries to facilitate the curricular needs of the students. The delivery management of the College Central Library is planned to be organized by the introduction of LIBSYS Software. More space is going to be added to the Library for the obvious reason of providing increased spatial facility to the students to accommodate greater number of students to ensure expanded access to Curricular Materials. Provision of internet access to the students has also being planned in the context of contemporary reality primarily to be centered at the Library.

In accordance to NAAC recommendations, College office is being planned to be equipped with On Line Transaction System, supported by Office Software. A quick, response from Office towards different Needs & Requirements of the students can be systemized.

A College Website is on the verge of being launched to disseminate required Informations – key & auxiliary.

Faculty Coner.

Proposals for Research Projects and Seminar are going to be submitted to Government & Non Government Organization in addition to ongoing Two Minor Research Project at Department of Geography & History sponsored by UGC. Participation to Seminars- National / International would be actively undertaken. Through Refresher and Orientation Courses being equipped with contemporary advancements to specific academic field is another indispensable programme to be undertaken by the faculty members.

The Outcome

This is a concise appraisal as details are being deliberated in accordance to questionnaire in Part B.

Curricular.

Courses:

West Bengal State Council of Higher Education has approved the Introduction of UG Courses in Sociology & Urdu in principle and consequent upon mandatory inspection from University of Calcutta and their consent, faculty recruitment for Socioogy on behalf of College has been finished. In all probability, the same for Urdu is going to finished soon. Sociology classes has already been introduced.

PG Diploma Course in Remote Sensing & GIS at Department of Geography has been cleared by University of Calcutta and formal approval from the Registrar, University of Calcutta is awaited. Professor Subir Sarkar, Eminent Meteorologist, Ex-Head, Department of Geography has also been agreed to be another Member of the Curricular Committee along with Professor Onkar Dikshit, IIT Kanpur.This Course is in the process of consolidation.

The Professional Curricular Stream known as the ‘Certificate Courses’ duly Appreciated by the Members of NAAC Peer Team, has been brought under a Committee Constituted by the Governing Body Members for the necessary up gradation of the Curricular components as also required proliferation by opening new courses.

New Extended Working Hours:

For effective curricular management the working time span of the college has been Rescheduled 7:45 Hrs to 14:45 Hrs. The twin aims of providing required direct teaching Hours and access to study material & faculty members have been ensured.

Teaching – Learning Evaluation.

A planar exhibiting indicative programs of conducting examinations both at the Department and Institution would be produced to facilitate the Students. The College Website would also provide required information as and when necessary to the students.

Infra Structural.

Expansion of infra structural facilities as mentioned above is in the process of implementation.

Library overhaul: Spatial Expansion with required arrangement for study is under progress to facilitate the requirement of Students. Apart from UGC fund increased amount from College Exchequer has simultaneously been released both for enhancing Qualitative & Quantitative strengthening of Library strength. For being technically equipped, LIBSYS software being introduced and INTERNET facility is also being positioned in the Library.

Department:

Department of Geography has started collecting the Journal ‘Mausam’, from India Metereological Department, Economic & Political Weekly, Journal published by Geographical Society Of India, Department of Geography, University of Calcutta. as also Yojona at it’s Seminar Library.

Geography Department is going to be allotted to additional space inspected by the Members of NAAC Peer Team, for enlarged GIS & Remote Sensing Laboratory required for proposed PG Course in Remote Sensing & GIS courses.

Office: The entire administrative system would be streamlined with automation supported by software generated network back up. The objective is to introduce a hassle free student friendly response management and processing & preservation of necessary information in digital form.

Part B:

Activities reflecting the goals and objective of the Institution:

As mentioned in Part A, to carry forward an innovative and consistent approach for quality enhancement and sustenance comprises the objective of the institution.

Better curricular management by College Hours extension, introduction of two new UG courses in consonance with the learner’s demand, preparation for PG Diploma Courses in Remote Sensing & GIS in accordance to NAAC Peer Team’s recommendation substantiates this effort.

Constant endeavor by the Faculty Members by academic enrichment by producing research papers and participation to Seminars / Conferences / Refresher Courses provides ample evidence.

Infra structural augmentation by expanding floor area of Library & commencing LIBSYS software for efficient Library management is the focused infra structural thrust to support curricular management. Gearing up the office administration by introducing software driven system would streamline the disbursement management.

UG : Sociology & Urdu.

Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

As this College is not an autonomous institution affiliated to University of Calcutta, Under present statutory provision of University Curricular design is being profiled by The Board of Studies for the respective subjects. Notwithstanding under this prescribed guideline, each departments of the college divides each paper into curricular units to facilitate gradual and stepped learning by the students.

As above, scope in framing transaction process is limited. Still by regular tutorials and unit tests a learner’s capacity is being evaluated and also being counseled for proper improvement by marking the deficiency.

Inter – disciplinary programmes started.

Present structure for conducting UG Courses under the provision of University of Calcutta provides little scope for introducing such courses.

In accordance to the circulars of University of Calcutta.

All the UG Honours Courses have been brought under the purview of qualitative evaluation by the students before their terminal i.e. III Yr. Examination conducted by the Principal.

Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results and issue of certificate:

A Software for office automation is to be attached and it is expected that within this coming session the above mentioned processes would be covered.


Increase in the infra structure facilities:

Arrangements for Remote Sensing & GIS Laboratory in Department of Geography is under preparation. Also in the Annexed Space necessary furniture and equipments have Been attached to raise a adequate infra structural facilities for the students.


Technology Up gradation:

Implemented in Library Management & Office Administration as mentioned before.


Computer & Internet Access and training to teachers and students:

Computer Access : at present available to the students of the departments of Journalism & Geography as part of Curriculum. Similar facility is going to be extended to the students of the department of education.

For other students a computer hub, already existing, duly inspected by the Members of the Peer Team, has been augmented.

Computer Training: Formal Computer training would be reintroduced. Necessary preparations for a UG Honours Course in Computer Science has been initiated by submitting a proposal to the University of Calcutta.

Internet Access: A preliminary facility has been installed at Library.

Financial aid to the student:

Tuition Fees for several months are being condoned at the recommendations supervising committee.

Activities and support from Alumni Association:

Alumni association holds annual meeting in the month of December each year Where through live interaction with the Principal valuable guidance is provided to improve the institutional delivery system. Prof. Smita Majumder, HOD, Economics is the convener of the committee for Alumni Association.

Activities and support from Parent – Teacher Association;

Each Department has their own platform of Parent – Teachers Association.


Health Services:

A basic facility for First Aid treatment is available at college. A regular woman employee is being maintained to look after the arrangement. This facility is being provided in association with the students’ Union.


Performance in Sport’s Activities:

Annual Sport’s meet has been conducted and the winners of different events were awarded with citation & certificates.


Incentive to outstanding sportsperson:

The College provide financial assistance to outstanding sportsperson to participate State/ National level sports events.


Student achievements & awards:

Students of Geography Department won Second Prize at Inter College Quiz Contest held at Bhairab Ganguly College, Kolkata.


Activities of the Guidance and Counseling Unit:

To be launched formally from this academic session.


Placement service provided to students

As this is a UG College where non technical courses are being conducted, availability of course oriented service is linked to PG degree attainments. Therefore scope for effective placement service is limited.


Development Programme for Non Teaching Staff:

College has decided to organize skill upgradation scheme required for the success automation drive of administrative disbursement.

This College Conducts Professional Courses Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday after the Classes of UG courses are over. The popular courses are on – Pre Primary Teachers’ Training, Library Science, Journalism, Fine Art & Commercial Arts. The College issue certificates & mark sheet after regular examinations in each session.

Submission of a new Project Proposal

Kaustubh Lahiri, HOD Department of Geography has submitted proposal for Research Project to Indian Council of Social Sciences Research titled ‘ Caste Development Index : Raising Parametric Foundation for Inclusive Growth.’ Department of Geography has prepared a proposal to organize a National Seminar on Community Deprivation & it’s amelioration in Indian Context and to submit the proposal in requisite format to UGC. The designated title is – Raising Caste Development Index : Parametric Foundation for Strategic Inclusive Growth.

The other possible destinations for sending petitions to receive auxiliary financial assistance are Planning Commission and Ministry of Social Justice.

Part C:

Explain the plans of the institution for the next year.

A New UG courses in Computer Science and PG Courses in Bengali & Geography would be tried to be introduced.

The PG Diploma course in Remote Sensing & GIS in Department of Geography as recommended by NAAC is in the stage of identifying appropriate authority for affiliation so that the manpower produced can receive desirable recognition from appropriate professional organizations.

Department of Geography is trying to form a Research Organization under the overall guidance of Prof. Amalesh Banerji, Rabindra Bharati University, Prof. J.B. Ganguly, Ex Vice Chancellor, Tripura University and Prof. A.K.Sharma, Dept. of Sociology, IIT Kanpur. The tentative name of proposed orgnazation is Global Forum of Development Studies / A.L. Basham Institute of North East India Social Sciences Research, to demonstrate application of Social Sciences For Community Welfare & Livelihood Management..
